MATERNAL DIABETES MELLITUS

The offspring of diabetic pregnancies have a two- to threefold greater chance of having a congenital anomaly when compared to infants of nondiabetic mothers (1). There are no diabetic-specific anomalies e.g. caudal regression syndrome is 600 times more common in the offspring of diabetic women, however it does still occur in the non diabetic population, and therefore cannot be considered specific for diabetes in pregnancy.
